Tasty soups are available for blood donors on Mondays and Tuesdays until the end of March

Blood donors can combine the pleasant with the helpful in February andMarch 2020. On Mondays and Tuesdays, delicious soups are available at the University Hospital's blood donation center from 11.30 a.m. The offer includes stews with meat as well as vegetarian and vegan cream soups. "Those who give something to the community should feel good here and also receive something themselves," explains Dr. Markus Umhau, Medical Director of the Blood Donation Center at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg. This is achieved through campaigns such as the donor breakfast, competitions or, as was the case in March, the soup offer. "Our surveys show that donors appreciate this. And we are pleased that our efforts are obviously being well received."

Nevertheless, the University Hospital's blood donation center is also affected by the nationwide trend of declining donor numbers. "We have to make it clear again and again: There is no alternative to blood. It cannot be produced artificially or replaced by something else. Blood donors are therefore more important than ever to ensure patient care."

Blood is particularly needed by people with cancer and for the treatment of seriously injured people, as well as for organ transplants and major operations. Anyone between the ages of 18 and 68 can donate (first-time donors up to the age of 60). An identity card and, if possible, a vaccination card must be brought along with every donation. Men can donate blood every 8 weeks, women every 12 weeks.

Monday and Tuesday 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Wednesday and Thursday 12 to 7 p.m.
Friday and Saturday 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
