Despite Corona, a new birth record is on the horizon at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg / Little Valerie is the 500th birth

It is good news in these times: There will probably be at least as many births and children at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology as in previous years. Little Valerie is the 500th birth at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg and saw the light of day on Monday, April 6, 2020 at 12:06 pm. She was born by caesarean section, is 53 cm long and weighs 3,355 grams.

"We are delighted that expectant mothers are placing their trust in us even in times of corona. Our team continues to reconcile intimacy and health aspects for expectant mothers and their children," says Prof. Dr. Ingolf Juhasz-Böss, Medical Director of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg. "Compared to previous years, we reached the 500 mark more quickly. We may even reach a new birth record this year," says Juhasz-Böss.

In 2017, the clinic recorded 1,825 births, in 2018 there were 1,847 births and in 2019 there were 1,856 births.

"In the current situation, we benefit from our experience in dealing with pregnant women with infectious diseases," says Juhasz-Böss. This is because the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg has always been prepared for pregnant women who also have an infectious disease. In order to be able to care for pregnant women with suspected and confirmed COVID-19, the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg has set up a second separate delivery room. "This allows us to virtually eliminate the risk of infection for other expectant mothers," says Juhasz-Böss.

In the current situation, an accompanying person may, as usual, be present during a natural birth in the delivery room or during a caesarean section if they are not infected with COVID-19. However, accompanying persons are still not allowed to visit the maternity wards.
