"On the way to a new everyday life"
Medical Center - University of Freiburg and University Heart Center Freiburg - Bad Krozingen are well equipped for the parallel treatment of patients with and without Covid-19
With almost 200 Covid-19 patients to date, the Medical Center - University of Freiburg is one of the hospitals in Germany with the most experience in treating this still very new disease. After new capacities were created in the first weeks of the pandemic at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg and the University Heart Center Freiburg - Bad Krozingen (UHZ) for the care of several hundred Covid-19 patients on normal wards and 150 ventilated patients, the focus in recent weeks has been on establishing a new daily routine at the hospital. This includes the strict separation of patients with and without Covid-19 on intensive care and normal wards as well as in the delivery room and the introduction of video consultations instead of face-to-face appointments. The safety of patients and employees is guaranteed despite increased outpatient operations thanks to the spatial and temporal equalization of outpatient appointments and the general obligation to wear masks at the University Hospital and the UHZ, which has been in force since Monday, 27 April.
Special responsibility as a maximum care provider
"As a maximum care provider, we have a special responsibility towards many seriously ill patients. We have been there for them throughout the last few weeks, whether on an outpatient or inpatient basis. At the same time, we have structured many processes in such a way that the challenges of the coronavirus crisis are in line with our tasks as a maximum care provider. We are on the way to a new everyday life in which we will continue to operate on two tracks in the long term," says Prof. Dr. Frederik Wenz, Chief Medical Officer of the Medical Center - University of Freiburg and Medical Director of the University Heart Center Freiburg - Bad Krozingen. "My thanks clearly go to our employees, who have made this possible through their great commitment and sense of responsibility."
Outpatient and inpatient operations expanded
Due to comprehensive hygiene concepts and a decreasing number of infections in the population, outpatient and inpatient operations at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg and the University Heart Center Freiburg - Bad Krozingen have already been gradually expanded again. Sick people should therefore contact the responsible department to find out to what extent treatment is currently possible.
It is now crucial that infections are prevented from entering the clinics as far as possible. "That is why we unfortunately have to maintain the ban on visits and the restriction on accompanying persons. However, the most important thing is still to keep your distance despite wearing a face mask and to disinfect your hands regularly," says Wenz.
