Urgent appeal for blood donations

Catch-up medical procedures and vacation season: Blood Donation Center of the Medical Center - University of Freiburg is in urgent need of blood donations

The Blood Donation Center at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg is calling on people in and around Freiburg to come and donate blood. "Operations that were postponed due to coronavirus can now take place," explains Dr. Markus Umhau, Medical Director of the Blood Donation Center. "At the same time, we are observing the traditional donation vacation slump. This is an unprecedented situation that exacerbates the shortage of donors in the summer. We are asking people to donate more blood at our center in the coming weeks," says Umhau. Not only people who need surgery, but also accident victims and cancer patients are often dependent on blood products. The zero positive and zero negative blood groups are particularly in demand. But all other blood groups are also needed to stabilize the supply.

Appointment donation increases safety for blood donors

Anyone who has already donated at the Blood Donation Center of the Medical Center - University of Freiburg can make an appointment via the facility's website. "Appointment donations ensure regulated processes and a limited number of people on the premises. This way, social distancing can be guaranteed," says Umhau. First-time donors must first register before making an appointment. This can be done by sending an email to blutspende@uniklinik-freiburg.de with the subject line "New donor", stating your full name and date of birth. After registration, it is possible to book an appointment via the appointment module. Anyone who would like to donate blood spontaneously is also welcome. Spontaneous donations without an appointment may result in longer waiting times.

Campaign during the summer vacations sweetens the donation experience

Those who donate during the summer vacations will not only be rewarded with a good feeling, but also with a sweet thank you. Every Wednesday and Thursday until Thursday, September 10, all donors will receive an ice cream.

An identity card and, if possible, a vaccination certificate are required for every blood donation. Donors must be between 18 and 68 years old (first-time donors up to 60 years old). Men can donate blood every 8 weeks, women every 12 weeks.
