Families wanted for online survey / Digital symposium on the challenges of children with disabilities or chronic illnesses

Home schooling, less contact with grandparents and limited medical care: The corona pandemic has changed the lives of some families considerably. In a study, the Center for Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg is now investigating the effects of the pandemic measures on children and adolescents with and without chronic illnesses and disabilities.

"The changes have been very different for families, some positive and some negative. With the survey, we want to contribute to a better understanding of the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on families," says study leader Dr. Thorsten Langer, senior physician in the Department of Neuropediatrics and Muscle Disorders at the Center for Pediatrics and Muscle Disorders. The results of the study, which was carried out in collaboration with the Kindernetzwerk e.V. association, should help to ensure that the situation of children and families can be better taken into account in future infection control measures.

Families wanted to take part

Families are being sought for the study to complete a total of three online questionnaires in the period from September 2020 to fall 2021. The focus is on the participation of children and young people in social life, the impact of the pandemic on family life and the quality of medical care. Families or custodians with one or more children aged between 1 and 18 can take part. The online survey takes 15 minutes to complete.

Digital symposium: Chronically ill children in the new pandemic school routine

In addition, a digital symposium will focus on the challenges faced by children and young people with chronic illnesses, disabilities or developmental disorders during the coronavirus pandemic. On Wednesday, September 30, 2020 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., the Social Pediatric Center of the Center for Pediatrics of the Medical Center - University of Freiburg is inviting specialists from the fields of school, medicine, psychology, integration and early intervention as well as those affected and interested to a digital symposium. In presentations and a panel discussion, experts and those affected will shed light on different perspectives and offer space for exchange.
