Physician and hepatitis researcher ranks Nobel Prize for Medicine
Prof. Dr. Robert Thimme will be available from 1 p.m. for press inquiries about the award ceremony
The Nobel Prize for Medicine 2020 is awarded for the discovery of the hepatitis C virus. Prof. Dr. Robert Thimme, Medical Director of the Department of Medicine II at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg, explains the award. He is a specialist in internal medicine, gastroenterology and endocrinology. Thimme's research focuses on the immune response to hepatitis viruses. Thimme has received numerous prizes and awards. He was recently appointed to the German National Academy of Sciences - Leopoldina. Thimme is co-spokesperson of the Collaborative Research Center / Transregio 179 "Causes of Healing or Chronification of Infections with Hepatitis Viruses", which is funded by the German Research Foundation with 11.4 million euros.
Thimme's team is using the example of the various hepatitis viruses to investigate the question of what determines whether infections heal in some patients but become chronic in most. The scientists also want to find out how this knowledge can be used for new therapeutic approaches - which is of great clinical importance given that more than 500,000 people in Germany are chronically infected with hepatitis.
