Cancer counseling app wins ideas competition for social innovations
The concept idea of the Psychosocial Cancer Counseling Center at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research / Concept phase begins
The diagnosis of cancer is a shock for many people. Around a third of cancer patients need professional psycho-oncological help. The Psychosocial Cancer Counseling Service at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg offers support. However, a long journey, physical impairments or the time-consuming cancer treatment are major hurdles that prevent some patients from making sufficient use of the counseling services. With the development of a cancer counseling app, the Psychosocial Cancer Counseling Service aims to provide cancer patients with digital support that is independent of time and place. The concept has now been awarded the Ideas Prize for Social Innovation by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF).
The cancer counseling app was selected as one of the best 30 ideas for society from more than 1,000 projects submitted in the public voting process of the BMBF's Germany-wide "Society of Ideas" competition. "We are delighted with the positive response from citizens. This shows us that the idea of a cancer counseling app is meeting with great interest," says PD Dr. Alexander Wünsch, Head of Psychosocial Cancer Counseling.
A digital solution for human challenges
"Sufferers often feel left alone. The app can facilitate contact and contribute to the prevention of mental illness," explains psychologist Natalie Röderer, who is leading the project together with Wünsch. The app is intended to complement personal counseling appointments and provide uncomplicated information and contact options in stressful situations. With the prize money of 12,500 euros, the idea will now be further developed in a six-month concept phase.
