Great joy even in these times: There have been more births and babies at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg this year than in previous years. The little girl is already the 1860th birth at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg this year and saw the light of day on Friday, December 11, 2020 at 3:52 pm. She is 49 cm long and weighs 2,960 grams. In 2019, there were 1,856 births at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg.
"We are delighted that we were able to welcome so many children this year," says Prof. Dr. Ingolf Juhasz-Böss, Medical Director of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg. "We are grateful that expectant mothers are placing their trust in us despite the current restrictions."
It is unclear whether there is a higher number of pregnancies due to corona. "We will probably only be able to see whether there really are so-called 'corona babies' in the next few months," says Juhasz-Böss.
Safe stay for mothers and newborns
All inpatients are tested for Sars-CoV-2 on admission. The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology has set up a second, separate delivery room to be able to care for pregnant women with suspected and confirmed COVID-19. "Our experience in dealing with pregnant women with infectious diseases is also benefiting us in the current situation," says Juhasz-Böss. This is because the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg has always been prepared for pregnant women who also have an infectious disease.
In the current situation, an accompanying person may, as usual, be present during a natural birth in the delivery room or during a caesarean section if they do not have COVID-19. Visits to the maternity wards are limited to one registered person, family or parent rooms are still available.
