Robotic surgery: Freiburg surgeon becomes guest lecturer in Paris
Prof. Dr. Stefan Fichtner-Feigl from the Medical Center - University of Freiburg will teach robotic surgery at the French universities of Sorbonne and Paris-Est Créteil in the future
The possibilities of robot-assisted interventions have grown enormously in recent years. In order to exploit the full potential of this still relatively new technology, comprehensive training by experienced physicians is crucial. An international expert in the field of oncological liver surgery is Prof. Dr. Stefan Fichtner-Feigl, Medical Director of the Department of General and Visceral Surgery at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg. He has now been appointed as a lecturer in the internationally renowned course on minimally invasive surgery and robot-assisted surgery at the Sorbonne and Paris-Est Créteil universities in Paris. He will teach the specialization "Robot-assisted liver surgery". Since March 2021, he has been teaching the 22 students via video conference. Lectures and exercises on site are planned for later.
"I am delighted to be able to pass on my experience and knowledge to outstanding young physicians from all over the world on this course," says Fichtner-Feigl, who is already intensively involved in training physicians in robot-assisted techniques at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg. Robot-assisted surgery makes it possible to control movements in the three-dimensional surgical field so precisely that even particularly complex liver operations can be performed with them. "Robot-assisted surgery can be a great relief for patients: The recovery time after the operation is shorter due to the much smaller access openings. In addition, surrounding healthy tissue and fine structures such as nerves or the smallest blood vessels can be spared very well. Our patients in Freiburg are already benefiting from this today," says Fichtner-Feigl.
