The Science Awards 2020 and 2019 were presented to Dr. Stefaniya Boneva and Prof. Dr. Daniel Böhringer

In mid-April, the 2020 Science Award of the Friends of the Medical Center - University of Freiburg e.V. was presented to Dr. Stefaniya Boneva, physician at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg's Department of Ophthalmology, in a small ceremony. In addition to the award winners and chairpersons of the association, Prof. Dr. Thomas Reinhard, Medical Director of the Medical Center - University of Freiburg's Eye Center, and Prof. Dr. Daniel Böhringer, Senior Physician at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg's Department of Ophthalmology, who received his science award from 2019 retrospectively, were also present.

Dr. Stefaniya Boneva received the award for her publication "Transcriptional Profiling Uncovers Human Hyalocytes as a Unique Innate Immune Cell Population" as first author in the journal Frontiers in Immunology. The researcher was able to prove that the cells of the vitreous humor in the eye have immune cell properties. This provided support for the theory of the immune privilege of the eye. Dr. Boneva's work is considered by the reviewers to be of high scientific and clinical significance. Dr. Rainer Dünzen (1st Chairman of the Friends of the University Eye Hospital Association) and Prof. Dr. Lutz Hansen (2nd Chairman of the Friends of the University Eye Hospital Association) have now presented the prize, which is endowed with 5,000 euros.

In addition, Prof. Dr. Daniel Böhringer also received the 2019 Science Award retrospectively. The award could not be presented until now due to the coronavirus pandemic. Prof. Böhringer was awarded the prize for his work "Rejection prophylaxis in corneal transplant" in the German Medical Journal.
