A century and a half of ophthalmology in Freiburg
150 years of university ophthalmology at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg / To mark the anniversary, the Eye Center is hosting an online conference for experts on June 11 and 12, 2021
Ophthalmology is a field that has fascinated people since early times. More than 3,600 years ago, regulations for eye operations were laid down in Babylonian tablets. From the 12th century onwards, ophthalmology also became increasingly widespread in Europe. It was initially part of surgery and only developed into an independent discipline in the 18th and 19th centuries. Freiburg was there from the very beginning and this year the Eye Center - University of Freiburg is celebrating the 150th anniversary of university ophthalmology. To mark its anniversary, the clinic is holding an online conference for specialists on Friday, June 11 and Saturday, June 12, 2021.
In the 150 years of its existence, seven Medical Directors have shaped the outstanding reputation of the Eye Center - University of Freiburg Medical Center. "We are particularly proud of the many young scientists who work here. We offer not only them, but all of our employees excellent training and continuing education opportunities," says Prof. Dr. Thomas Reinhard, Medical Director of the Eye Center.
Almost 30,000 ophthalmological operations were performed at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg in 2019 and more than 72,000 outpatients were treated. With its digital services, the Eye Center - University of Freiburg also plays a pioneering role at the Medical Center.
