Low-threshold help through the cancer advice app

Psychosocial support for cancer patients: Medical Center - University of Freiburg project takes part in BMBF ideas competition / Citizens can vote for further funding of the project until June 21

Around a third of cancer patients are under so much psychological stress after a drastic diagnosis that they need professional help. The Psychosocial Cancer Counseling Service at the Comprehensive Cancer Center Freiburg - CCCFof the Medical Center - University of Freiburg offers support. However, long distances, physical impairments and time-consuming cancer treatment make it difficult for many patients to access counseling services quickly and easily.

The Psychosocial Cancer Counseling Service at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg would like to offer a solution here and develop the Cancer Counseling App for digital support for cancer patients, regardless of time or location. "The app can close the large gap between need and supply and thus provide low-threshold help for those affected in a very difficult phase of life," says PD Dr. Alexander Wünsch, Head of Psychosocial Cancer Counseling at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg. The project is taking part in the ideas competition organized by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and citizens can now vote for it online at www.gesellschaft-der-ideen.de. The top-rated ideas will receive a maximum of 200,000 euros in funding from the BMBF.

Close exchange with those affected

If the submitted project concept receives further funding, the cancer advice app will be made ready for practical use in a trial phase lasting around two years. "We want to actively involve cancer patients and their relatives in the development of the app and incorporate their experiences," explains psychologist Natalie Röderer, who is leading the project together with Wünsch.

The researchers from University of Freiburg have already secured a number of project partners, including Fraunhofer ISI Karlsruhe, Krebsverband Baden-Württemberg e. V., Heilbronn University of Applied Sciences, Bielefeld University and Bonn-Rhein-Sieg University of Applied Sciences.

Vote for funding from the BMBF

The cancer advice app has already been awarded the 2020 Ideas Prize for Social Innovation as part of the BMBF's "Society of Ideas - Competition for Social Innovation" competition. In order for the app to be developed further, it is important that the public participates actively in the online voting.

Voting is still possible until Monday, June 21, 2021. Interested parties click on the link below, enter their details and agree to participate. The topic "Cancer counseling app" can then be selected. Participants will be asked to justify their choice. Here you can find the online voting: www.gesellschaft-der-ideen.de
