Study on the influence of the gut microbiome on COVID-19 vaccination protection
Medical Center - University of Freiburg is looking for study participants
Every day, more people receive a vaccination against SARS-CoV-2, which is very effective in preventing COVID-19 disease. In a new study, the Institute for Prevention and Cancer Epidemiology at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg is now investigating how long the vaccine protection lasts and on which factors the duration of effectiveness depends. The aim is to investigate the time course of SARS-CoV-2 antibody formation in the blood and the influence of the intestinal microbiome on the strength and duration of antibody formation. For this purpose, 200 people who are vaccinated with the BioNTech/Pfizer vaccine - independently of the study - will be followed up over an 18-month period. During this period, immune antibodies in the blood and the intestinal microbiome will be examined. For this study, the Medical Center - University of Freiburg is looking for people who have not yet been vaccinated and are interested in participating in the study as part of their COVID-19 vaccination.
What requirements must be met?
- Upcoming BioNTech/Pfizer vaccination against COVID-19
- Interval between first and second vaccination of 3 or 6 weeks (+/-1 day)
- No antibiotics taken in the last 3 months
- No previous COVID-19 disease
- Age between 18 and 65 years
What will the study participants have to do?
- Up to five appointments (ten minutes each) over 12 months
- Donation of two stool samples and up to five blood samples
- Appointment 1 and 2: 1-2 days before/after first and second vaccination respectively
- Appointment 3: 2-4 weeks after second vaccination
- Appointment 4 and 5: 6 and 12 months after first vaccination
What do the study participants receive?
- Repeated determination of antibodies over 12 months
- 100€ and a voucher for €50 at the end of the study
