Giving children laughter even during the pandemic

Luise, Ernst, Macke, Huhn and Schraube - these are the clinic clowns at the Center for Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine (ZKJ) at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg. They are also there for the children during the coronavirus pandemic, but in a slightly different way. For over a year now, two clowns have been taking it in turns to visit the children outside in the garden rather than in the ZKJ's hospital rooms. The children can follow the fun every Thursday from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the window. "The special challenge is that we play without direct contact with our little spectators," says Macke. However, sometimes families are also present in the park at a distance. "We once played hide and seek outside with a little patient and involved the whole garden in the game. That was great fun," says Huhn. "This interaction is really special and doesn't work like this on the ward, so you also have to see the positive side."

Even in winter, the clowns have played outside in the snow and frosty temperatures, incorporating a sledge into their performance, for example. Unfortunately, children who have to lie in bed cannot be reached in this way, which is why the clowns have posted a few funny videos on their YouTube channel "ZKJ-KlinikClowns Freiburg". "We even skyped with some of the children and were able to build up a very close relationship with them," says Ernst .

The clinic clowns have been an integral part of the ZKJ for almost 20 years. "Their work with the children is of very special value," says Prof. Dr. Charlotte Niemeyer, spokesperson for the Center for Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg. "During the coronavirus pandemic, children in particular have to take a back seat, for example here with the limited opportunities for visits. It is therefore all the more important that a small, fun diversion is still offered in everyday hospital life."

The work of the clinic clowns at the Center for Pediatrics - University of Freiburg Medical Center is financed exclusively by donations.
