Volunteering at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg
For 35 years, the volunteer helpers of the Green Ladies and Gentlemen have been making patients' hospital stays at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg easier / Now they are urgently looking for reinforcements
The green coat is their trademark: The Green Ladies and Gentlemen have been helping patients at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg on a voluntary basis for 35 years. They run small errands for patients, take them for walks, read to them, help with childcare or simply lend a sympathetic ear. They are a great support, especially for patients who cannot be visited regularly by relatives.
Reinforcement wanted
"Since the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic, many of our members have unfortunately stopped working. That's why we are happy to welcome anyone who is interested in becoming part of the Green Ladies and Gentlemen," says Angelina Rech, who heads the Green Ladies and Gentlemen of Christian Hospital Aid together with Joachim Bretschneider. "No one in our team has to be afraid of infection in the hospital: We have no contact with patients with infectious diseases, wear the classic protective clothing for medical staff and undergo free hygiene training."
The Green Ladies and Gentlemen do not carry out any nursing work, but their management team is in constant contact with the Department of Nursing and the educators on site. "The most important thing is to be able to listen and give people the feeling that we are there for them," says Bretschneider. " It's nice to see how much appreciation we receive from patients, hospital staff and visitors alike."
The Green Ladies and Gentlemen at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg
The idea originally came from America, where volunteers have been helping patients since the late 1960s - albeit in pink. In 1985, Prof. Dr. Franz Daschner, former Director of the Institute for Environmental Medicine and Hospital Hygiene at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg, asked the Caritas Conferences Germany to set up such a helper group. The retired Protestant provost Karl-Heinz Ronecker, then parish priest at the Ludwigskirche in Freiburg, also approached the Order of St. John with the same idea. After some negotiation talks, both the Green Ladies of the Christian Hospital Aid and the Protestant Johanniter began their work in individual clinics of the Medical Center - University of Freiburg. "The two branches of the Green Ladies and Gentlemen still exist today, each led by a dual head. For organizational reasons, we divide the support of the various clinics between us, but we are still in close contact with each other," explains Bretschneider.
