Cancer counseling app wins ideas competition for social innovations
Award-winning project of the Psychosocial Cancer Counseling Center at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg now starts the test phase / Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) funds further development of the app
A cancer diagnosis affects more than just a person's body. Around a third of patients need professional psycho-oncological help. The point of contact is the Psychosocial Cancer Counseling Service of the Comprehensive Cancer Center Freiburg - CCCF at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg. It is not always possible for those affected to make full use of the counseling services. In order to be able to offer patients support regardless of time and place, the Psychosocial Cancer Counseling Center is developing a digital solution: a cancer counseling app.
Out of more than 1,000 projects originally submitted, the cancer counseling app has now been selected as one of the top ten in the Germany-wide "Society of Ideas" competition organized by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). The projects selected by a jury of experts, the BMBF and members of the public will receive funding of up to 200,000 euros, giving them the opportunity to implement their idea. "We are delighted about the great recognition of our project. It shows us that the idea of a cancer counseling app addresses a very important topic," says PD Dr. Alexander Wünsch, Head of Psychosocial Cancer Counseling at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg.
A digital solution for human challenges
"So far, we have conducted a study to investigate the needs of patients and their relatives. We want to incorporate the results into the app development. Many people want orientation and clear information, but also contact with regional contact points and other affected people," explains Natalie Röderer, psychologist at the Psychosocial Cancer Counseling Center of the Medical Center - University of Freiburg, who is leading the project together with Wünsch. The app is intended to complement personal counseling appointments and provide uncomplicated information and contact options in stressful situations. In the upcoming two-year project period, the app will be further developed and focus on the needs of those affected, their relatives and ultimately also the employees of the cancer counseling center.
