Theodor Axenfeld Medal for Freiburg ophthalmologist

The "Freunde der Universitäts-Augenklinik Freiburg e.V." (Friends of the University of Freiburg Eye Clinic) has presented this year's award

The 2021 Theodor Axenfeld Medal of the association "Freunde der Universitäts-Augenklinik Freiburg e.V." goes to Prof. Dr. Claudia Auw-Hädrich, Senior Physician at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg's Department of Ophthalmology. She receives the prize of 5,000 euros for her outstanding publications in the field of ocular pathology. The prize money will go towards her current research project "The search for prognostic factors in conjunctival melanoma".

The "Friends of the University of Freiburg Eye Clinic" association introduced the awarding of a science prize for outstanding work from the University of Freiburg Eye Clinic in 2016. In 2020, it was decided to rename this the "Theodor Axenfeld Prize" and to combine it with the award of a medal of the same name. Karl Theodor Paul Polykarpus Axenfeld (1867-1930) was a German ophthalmologist. In 1901, Axenfeld took over the chair of ophthalmology at the University of Freiburg. He published over 200 papers on all areas of ophthalmology. The "Axenfeld anomaly", the "Axenfeld-Schürenberg syndrome", the "Axenfeld-Rieger syndrome", a diplobacterium (Haemophilus lacunatus, "Morax-Axenfeld") and the "Axenfeld loop" are named after him.
