150th gynecological procedure using the Da Vinci surgical system
Patients benefit from extensive experience with the minimally invasive technique at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg / Rapid recovery with few complications
In mid-November, the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg successfully operated on its 150th patient using the Da-Vinci computer-assisted robotic system. This technique was established in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology less than two years ago. Thanks to the currently most modern surgical robot, benign and malignant tumors of the uterus can now be operated on in Freiburg in a minimally invasive and particularly gentle manner. The 150th patient, Katharina Bühler, was discharged home safe and sound on the second day after the operation.
Gentle procedure and rapid recovery
"I am delighted that we can offer our patients procedures with this very precise but highly complex system with so much routine. Blood loss during the operation is minimal, the wound heals quickly and in the vast majority of cases there are few complications and significantly less pain during recovery," says Prof. Dr. Ingolf Juhasz-Böss, Medical Director of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg. According to Juhasz-Böss, each patient's personal medical history is taken into account to determine which type of procedure is most suitable.
Precise incisions thanks to high-resolution images and fine-tuned controls
The Da Vinci surgical system consists of several finely movable arms on which minimally invasive instruments and a controllable video system are mounted. This provides high-resolution 3D images with up to tenfold magnification. The surgical robot enables surgeons to make particularly precise incisions that are almost impossible to perform with a human hand. The camera and operating arms are controlled by the surgeons on a console, with which the movements of the finger are precisely transferred to the robot arms. "The robot is like an extended, optimized arm that carries out our instructions," explains Juhasz-Böss.
Surgeons in other areas of the University Hospital also rely on robot-assisted surgery in certain cases. This applies to complex operations in the abdomen, urological procedures, heart and lung operations, among others.
