Parking with added value at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg

PBW opens the first self-built parking garage in Breisacher Straße / Sustainable parking with around 270 spaces

Patients and visitors to the Medical Center - University of Freiburg will have more parking spaces in the immediate vicinity of the hospital in future. Parkraumgesellschaft Baden-Württemberg mbH (PBW) opened a new parking garage in Breisacher Straße in Freiburg at the end of March, which was designed in close cooperation with the Construction and Development Planning Department and Business Unit 3 - Services of the Medical Center - University of Freiburg. For the first time, PBW is not only managing a parking area handed over by the state, but has also taken on the responsibility of building the new parking garage itself.

"The decision to carry out a construction project of this size ourselves was an easy one for us," explains Gebhard Hruby, Managing Director of PBW. "After all, PBW has built up enormous expertise in the maintenance of specialist properties over the years. We were able to successfully apply this knowledge and the standards developed in the course of renovations to the current new building and develop tailor-made solutions for the needs of the university hospital."

Anja Simon, Commercial Director of the Medical Center - University of Freiburg, also believes that the improved parking situation offers clear added value for visitors and patients of the hospital: "Many of our patients are dependent on nearby parking facilities due to walking difficulties, age or illness. We are therefore very pleased that the new parking garage in the immediate vicinity of the Medical Center - University of Freiburg is now in operation. Families who will soon be attending appointments at the new Center for Pediatrics will also have short distances between the parking lot and the clinic."

Modern parking comfort in a friendly atmosphere

A total of 276 parking spaces with a convenient width of 2.70 meters, including 28 women's parking spaces, three spaces for people with disabilities and ten loading spaces with individual space detection will be available for parking in future. The eight parking levels are video-monitored and accessible via two elevators. A sophisticated color-coding system and light-dark contrasts in the floor markings help with orientation and ensure a friendly ambience.

Visitors who want to arrive in an environmentally friendly way with an electric vehicle can charge their vehicle with the PBW e-parking card and from the second quarter of 2022 - after the charging points have been integrated into the Hubject intercharge backend - with charging cards from third-party providers. It is expected that it will also be possible to activate and pay for charging processes by Girocard from summer 2022.

The vParken mobility service, which can already be used in many PBW properties to book digital parking tickets or make cashless payments for parking, is also available in the Breisacher Straße multi-storey parking lot. With the vParken card, which can be requested free of charge via the vParken app, there is no need to buy a ticket or go to the pay machine. The card is simply presented at the entrance and exit to open the barrier, and billing is collected at the end of the month via the vParken app.

Clever concepts for more sustainability

Sustainability played a major role in the design of the exterior façade, the parking garage roof and the open space around the parking garage. A low-maintenance, extensive green roof, consisting of moss and sedum, ensures a better climate and slows down rainwater run-off. The rainwater that falls on the roof is absorbed into the ground via a trench and infiltration system to conserve resources and does not end up in the sewage system. The outdoor area, which will be planted with trees and shrubs by the end of April, also enhances the urban area. A bicycle parking facility has been integrated into the parking building to securely store up to 45 bicycles and e-bikes. This will be equipped with a charging facility for e-bikes at a later date.

The parking garage façade was planned in close consultation with the City of Freiburg's design advisory board. The color scheme and surface structure were developed at the suggestion of the committee and adapted to the appearance of the surrounding institute buildings. The louvre cladding that has now been installed not only provides additional light and fresh air inside, but also ensures that the parking lot blends in well with the overall architectural design.
