World Blood Donor Day on June 14 / Freiburg Blood Donor Center asks for support
In South Baden, as in the whole of Germany, too little blood is being donated at the moment."Blood donations are particularly scarce during the vacation season," says Dr. Markus Umhau, Medical Director of the Blood Donation Center at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg. Paradoxically, the easing of coronavirus restrictions makes the situation particularly critical: "People are enjoying the nice weather and the leisure activities that are now available again - and are donating less. That's understandable, but of course it would still be great if donors continued to come to us."
The demand for donations of blood groups 0 negative, 0 positive and A negative is particularly high at the moment. To avoid waiting times, appointments can be booked on the blood donation center's website - but spontaneous donors are also welcome.
"It only takes a few minutes to donate - please take the time. Your donation can save another person's life," says PD Dr. Richard Schäfer, Deputy Director of the Institute of Transfusional Medicine and Genetherapy at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg. At the Medical Center - University of Freiburg, the number of donations currently fluctuates between 60 and 130 per day - a constant level of at least 120 donations per day would be necessary to meet the needs of all clinics.
The blood donation center "sweetens" the willingness to help by rewarding blood donors with a crispy chocolate croissant every Monday and Tuesday in June. Healthy people between the ages of 18 and 72 are eligible to donate blood, new donors up to the age of 64.
