The "Freunde der Universitäts-Augenklinik Freiburg e.V." association is asking for support for a seriously ill patient
The "Friends of the Medical Center - University of Freiburg e.V." association is supporting a long-time patient from Russia who has undergone frequent operations at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg's Eye Center over the past 21 years.
The 41-year-old survived an attack with sulphuric acid in 1999, in which she suffered severe burns all over her body, both externally and internally. Since then, she has undergone more than 200 operations on her skin, respiratory tract and eyes, and one eye had to be removed. The cornea of the second eye, which was also corroded by the acid, has to be transplanted every four to five years at the University Eye Hospital. "We have been following the patient for a very long time and want to continue to offer her the best possible treatment at our clinic," says her treating physician Prof. Dr. Thomas Reinhard, Medical Director of the Medical Center - University of Freiburg's Department of Ophthalmology.
In 2019, a severe herpes virus infection affected this eye. A new corneal transplant is due this year. In addition, intraocular pressure drops repeatedly threaten the patient's vision. Supporters are still being sought for the urgently needed operation and the costs of further treatment. Without care at the Eye Center in Freiburg, the patient will lose her sight completely.
