After an organizational tour de force, the Blood Donation Center of the Medical Center - University of Freiburg opens on October 17 in newly renovated rooms and at a new location

Light wood and lots of glass, a new signage system and state-of-the-art technology: the Blood Donation Center of the Medical Center - University of Freiburg will open in new premises at Breisacher Str. 115b on Monday, October 17, 2022. Blood donors can expect not only a friendly, modern ambience at the new location, but also an optimized process. Due to the move, the blood donation center will only be closed on Saturday, October 15. Donations will resume on Monday morning at 8 am.

"We are doing everything we can to make donating blood as pleasant as possible," explains PD Dr. Richard Schäfer, Senior Physician at the Institute of Transfusional Medicine and Genetherapy at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg. "The selfless commitment of the donors is indispensable for the patients at our university hospital. We therefore very much hope that they will all continue to come to us."

The blood donation center was located in Haus Langerhans for more than 20 years. The building is now giving way to the construction site for the new replacement surgery building. The rooms at Breisacher Str. 115b were renovated and converted over a period of months in order to meet the diverse requirements of blood donation. Among other things, a new guidance system was integrated to reduce waiting times and make the process even smoother. The areas for apheresis and whole blood donations are no longer separated, so that changes in the volume of donations can be responded to quickly - the areas are equipped for each type of donation. This should also help to avoid waiting times.

More than 31,000 people donate blood at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg every year. As the platelets obtained from this blood can only be stored for a few days, for example, a continuous volume of donations is immensely important. "Without the meticulous organization of every last detail and the excellent cooperation of the entire team, this would not be possible," says Schäfer, impressed. "So my heartfelt thanks go to everyone involved."

Opening hours: Mon. & Tue. 8 a.m. - 3 p.m., Wed. & Thurs. 12 p.m. - 7 p.m., Fri. & Sat. 8 a.m. - 1 p.m.

Access regulations: Wearing an FFP2 masks is mandatory in the blood donation center. Please also check the blood donation center website for current regulations.
