International consortium funded with two million euros
Institute for Evidence in Medicine at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg leads project to advise EU member states in their decisions on national vaccination recommendations
An international consortium led by the Institute for Evidence in Medicine (IfEM) at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg has won a tender for a European Union health project. The aim of the four-year collaboration is to provide methodological support to EU member states in their decisions on national vaccination recommendations, particularly with regard to COVID-19 and possible new virus variants. The work of the consortium will start in October. The project funding amounts to two million euros. Around 400,000 euros will go to Freiburg.
The specific agreement is to produce 16 systematic reviews. They will serve to evaluate and summarize the current state of knowledge on vaccines and vaccination programs in the EU member states and the European Economic Area. In addition to the reviews themselves, the consortium will also develop and conduct online training courses on the methods for assessing the evidence.
The National Immunization Technical Advisory Groups (NITAGs) in Europe in particular will benefit from this project. They are made up of independent experts from various disciplines and are integrated into the national immunization programmes. The NITAGs recommend vaccines and the corresponding strategies and programs in the individual countries. They are supported by the World Health Organization (WHO).
Other partners are the Cochrane Centers in Austria (Danube University Krems) and Ireland (University of Galway), as well as the Robert Koch Institute and PricewaterhouseCoopers Luxembourg for project management. At EU level, the European Health and Digital Executive Agency (HaDEA) is involved.
