Freiburg scientist appointed to the Leopoldina

Epidemiologist Prof. Dr. Dr. Karin Michels is a new member of the National Academy of Sciences / The election is considered one of the highest scientific honors


Prof. Dr. Dr. Karin Michels has been a member of the National Academy of Sciences - Leopoldina since July 2023. Michels is Professor of Tumor Epidemiology at the Faculty of Medicine - University of Freiburg and Director of the Institute for Prevention and Cancer Epidemiology at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg. She is an expert on the causes of breast cancer and analyzes the influence of nutrition on health maintenance and the microbiome in particular. Admission to the Leopoldina is one of the highest academic honors and recognitions for scientists.

"Freiburg is a research-intensive location for university medicine. This is impressively confirmed by the continued acceptance of our scientists as members of the Leopoldina," says Prof. Dr. Lutz Hein, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine - University of Freiburg. "Prof. Michels' work deserves the highest recognition. By heading the NAKO Study Center in Freiburg, she is also contributing to research into new risk factors and early detection features for important widespread diseases."

About the person:

Prof. Dr. Dr. Karin Michels has been Professor of Tumor Epidemiology at the University of Freiburg since 2008 and has headed the newly founded Institute for Prevention and Cancer Epidemiology at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg since 2013. Prior to this, she was a private lecturer at Harvard Medical School in Boston, USA, from 2000 to 2002 and APL Professor of Epidemiology from 2003 to 2015.

The Leopoldina

Founded in 1652, the Leopoldina is one of the oldest scientific academies in the world. With around 1,500 members, the Leopoldina brings together outstanding scientists from Germany, Austria, Switzerland and numerous other countries. As Germany's national academy, the Leopoldina has represented German science in international bodies since 2008 and takes an independent position on the scientific basis of political and social issues.
