Generous donation for Kinderherzen retten e.V.

The Society for Knowledge, Service and Material in Medicine (WiSMa) has donated 15,000 euros to the Freiburg-based association Kinderherzen retten e.V. (Saving Children's Hearts)

The Freiburg-based association Kinderherzen retten e.V. is delighted to have received a donation of 15,000 euros from the Gesellschaft für Wissen, Service und Material in der Medizin (WiSMa). The first chairwoman of the association, Josephine Fuchs, accepted the symbolic donation check in the form of a gingerbread heart from the management of WiSMa, Henning Meyer and Lorenz Breiner, at the beginning of October.

"The donation is a great support for the association. With the money from the association, we can enable children with heart disease to lead a normal life," says e. m. Prof. Dr. Dr. Friedhelm Beyersdorf, founder of Kinderherzen retten e. V. and former Medical Director of the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg. On average, 15,000 to 25,000 euros are needed to operate on a child. "For the program, we select children who can be cured with a single operation. When the children leave the hospital, they are healthy," says Prof. Dr. Martin Czerny, Medical Director of the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg.

Kinderherzen retten e.V.

Kinderherzen retten e. V. was founded in 2002 under the direction of Beyersdorf and is closely associated with the Medical Center - University of Freiburg. The association specializes in the treatment of children with congenital heart defects, which is not possible in their home countries. However, such procedures are routine at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg and are performed by experienced paediatric heart specialists such as Prof. Dr. Johannes Kroll, Head of the Paediatric Heart Surgery Section of the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery, and Prof. Dr. Brigitte Stiller, Medical Director of the Department of Congenital Heart Defects and Pediatric Cardiology.

In addition to selecting and treating the young patients, Claudia Lackermaier, Managing Director of Kinderherzen retten e.V., also organizes the entire transport and the stay with the volunteer host families in Freiburg. The association relies on donations for support in all areas. So far, the association has already been able to help 265 children with heart disease from Central and Latin America, Eastern Europe, Africa, Syria and Iraq to lead healthy lives.
