First press release on a scientific publication written entirely by artificial intelligence is a significant step in communication

The Medical Center - University of Freiburg has taken an important step in integrating artificial intelligence into its communication work. On November 15, 2023, the hospital published its first press release generated entirely by artificial intelligence entitled "Innovative cell models can make cancer immunotherapy safer", which presents a scientific study in a way that is understandable to laypeople. The link to the scientific, English-language abstract of the study and a series of rules and restrictions with which the ChatGPT system was trained in advance were sufficient for the creation. Only minor corrections had to be made manually.

"The use of AI is revolutionizing communication processes. The valuable time we save thanks to AI can be invested in new communication strategies and quality assurance," says Benjamin Waschow, Head of Corporate Communications at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg. "In the year since they have been on the market, the systems have become significantly better, so that we are now achieving the quality standards we are aiming for."

Increased efficiency through AI technology

Responsibility always remains with people, both on the communication side and on the scientific side. "It doesn't matter what contribution AI and humans make individually. The combination of AI-supported creation and human expertise is crucial for the quality of our press releases. The AI makes the work much easier, but the final review and approval by our experts ensures that the content meets our high standards," adds Waschow. With this development, the Medical Center - University of Freiburg is demonstrating how AI technology can also be efficiently integrated into the process of science communication. AI is already being used successfully in other areas of Corporate Communications, such as social media.
