Renovation of the Luther Church begins

Construction work begins in April on a new teaching and learning center for students and premises for the university dental clinics

The Medical Center - University of Freiburg will begin renovating the Lutherkirche on April 8, 2024. The church was deconsecrated in 2016 and initially used as an event space. The conversion of the Lutherkirche and the two adjoining buildings will create space for new premises: In future, a teaching and learning center for the Faculty of Medicine - University of Freiburg and a phantom hall for the Center for Dental Medicine of the Medical Center - University of Freiburg are to be housed here.

Renovated from the ground up

In April, the first construction phase will begin with the gutting and remediation of the interior of the nave. The basement will also be gutted for the planned expansion of a phantom room, which is currently still located in the west wing of the Center for Dental Medicine. From May, the former janitor's building on Barbarastrasse and the theater building on Lutherkirchstrasse will be demolished.

The necessary infrastructural connection for the Lutherkirche site will be completed this summer with an extension of the supply lines along Hugstetter Straße, which will restrict road traffic in some areas. The necessary exterior renovation measures and the extension of the Phantom Hall will then run until the end of 2026. During this renovation period, the church clock and bells will be out of service. Construction site traffic will be routed via Barbarastrasse.
