Freiburg University Medical Center and BDH-Klinikum cooperate closely in new medical care center (MVZ) in Waldkirch

On 1 August 2025, the BDH-Klinik Waldkirch took over a neurosurgical contract doctor's practice in Waldkirch and opened a medical care center (MVZ) there. The MVZ will be managed by two senior physicians from the Department of Neurosurgery at Freiburg University Hospital, who will remain employed there. This will create a cross-sector care structure that offers patients in South Baden continuous access from outpatient consultations to cutting-edge university medicine in neurosurgery.

"The MVZ enables patients to receive continuous care close to home, while complex procedures continue to take place at the University Medical Center Freiburg," says Prof. Dr. Ulrich Hubbe, Head of the Spine Therapy Section of the Department of Neurosurgery at the University Medical Center Freiburg. He manages the MVZ together with Privatdozent Dr. Christoph Scholz, Head of Peripheral Nerves at the Department of Neurosurgery.

Partnership strengthens regional quality of care

Prof. Dr. Jürgen Beck, Medical Director of the Department of Neurosurgery at the Freiburg University Medical Centre, emphasizes: "The new structure will shorten waiting times and create attractive learning locations for the next generation of neurosurgeons." Prof. Dr. Frederik Wenz, Chief Medical Director of the University Medical Center Freiburg, emphasizes: "With the MVZ, we are setting an example for integrated neurosurgery in South Baden and ensuring that excellent care is provided where it is needed."

"The opening of the MVZ in Waldkirch is an important step towards making neurosurgical care in the region even closer and more patient-oriented," says Daniel Charlton, Managing Director of BDH Kliniken. The partnership with the University Medical Center Freiburg enables us to link neurosurgical care in the region even more closely and offer patients the best possible treatment locally."

Cross-sector healthcare ecosystem for South Baden

The aim of the partners is to build a neurosurgical healthcare network in South Baden beyond the MVZ. Outpatient and inpatient services will be bundled in a coordinated manner in order to close gaps in care and standardize quality standards. In the future, BDH-Klinik Waldkirch and Freiburg University Hospital will examine further joint services in order to expand synergies and create sustainable structures for the future.
