European specialist society confirms very high quality of treatment at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg for widespread autoimmune disease of the eye socket

The Orbital Center of the Medical Center - University of Freiburg is now one of only five centers in Germany certified by the European Group on Graves Orbitopathy (EUGOGO) for the specialized care of patients with endocrine orbitopathy. Endocrine orbitopathy is the most common disease of the eye socket. The inflammation of the orbital tissue often occurs in conjunction with a thyroid disease such as Graves' disease. At the Freiburg Orbital Center, the Departments of Eye Center, Oral, Maxillofacial and Regional Plastic Surgery, Neurosurgery, Internal Medicine II, Otorhinolaryngology, Nuclear Medicine and Neuroradiology work closely together to ensure optimal treatment.

When the thyroid gland attacks the eyes

Endocrine orbitopathy is an autoimmune disease that can affect both the thyroid gland and the eye socket. It often causes reddening of the surface of the eye, protrusion of the eyeballs and swelling in the eyelid area. Changes in the eye muscles can also lead to a squint with double vision and, in rare cases, even pressure on the optic nerve.
