World Prematurity Day campaign day on November 16, 2025 at the Center for Pediatrics / Information and hands-on activities for families and interested parties

On Sunday, November 16, 2025, the Medical Center - University of Freiburg invites you to this year's World Premature Baby Day from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Center for Pediatrics (Breisacher Straße 62, Freiburg). Under the motto "Premature babies - We are here for you!", the Department of General Pediatrics, Adolescent Medicine and Neonatology is organizing a varied program for families, children and interested parties. The day of action is supported by the "Frühchenverein Freiburg e.V." Admission is free, registration is not required.

In addition to a teddy bear hospital, a premature baby games course and other hands-on activities, visitors can take part in a virtual tour of the premature baby intensive care unit. Specialists will be on hand to explain how modern incubators work and what special care premature babies need. The initiative "Echte Helden - Für unsere Center for Pediatrics Freiburg e. V." will also be providing information about its commitment. Coffee, tea, cool drinks and freshly baked waffles will be available.

"We want to show how versatile the care of premature babies is today and at the same time give families the opportunity to exchange ideas and talk to each other," says Prof. Dr. Hans Fuchs, Medical Director of Neonatology in the Department of General Pediatrics, Adolescent Medicine and Neonatology at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg.

The best conditions for a safe start in life

In Germany, around one in ten children is born prematurely. Many of these children need intensive medical support in the first few days and weeks, as they are not yet able to breathe, drink or regulate their body temperature independently.

The Neonatology and Paediatric Intensive Care Section of the Department of General Pediatrics, Adolescent Medicine and Neonatology and the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Perinatology at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg are certified as a Level I Perinatal Center and thus specialize in the treatment of extremely premature infants. The modern neonatal intensive care unit S4 with 20 beds offers optimal care thanks to the close spatial interaction with the delivery room and postnatal ward. Almost all places have the option of "rooming-in" so that parents can be with their children permanently. Over 500 newborns are treated here every year.
