Information event on diabetes-related foot pain

Lectures for patients and specialist audiences at the Interdisciplinary Pain Center of the Medical Center - University of Freiburg


Poorly healing wounds, tingling, numbness and burning pain are typical symptoms of diabetic foot syndrome, which often occurs in combination with nerve damage. One in four people with diabetes suffers from this condition at least once in their lives. In the fifth part of the event series 'Pain Treatment Hand in Hand', experts from the Interdisciplinary Pain Center at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg will inform specialists and patients about current treatment methods for chronic pain disorders. They will report on the treatment of diabetic foot syndrome and painful diabetic polyneuropathy from an internal medicine and pain medicine perspective.

In the patient event, the speakers will present current concepts of blood glucose control and inform the audience about the status of drug-based pain treatment. In this context, a local therapy using a patch that was recently approved for the treatment of pain in diabetes mellitus will also be explained. The audience will also hear details about the success and effectiveness of spinal cord stimulation for severe pain caused by diabetic foot syndrome.

In the event for the specialist audience, Prof. Dr. Jochen Seufert, Head of the Department of Endocrinology and Diabetology at the Department of Medicine II at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg, will talk about the diagnosis and treatment of diabetic foot syndrome. Dr. Peter Behrens, senior physician at the Interdisciplinary Pain Center of the Medical Center - University of Freiburg, will then provide information on drug-based pain therapy for diabetic polyneuropathy. Dr. Kristin Kieselbach, Medical Director of the Interdisciplinary Pain Center at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg, will report on the results and mode of action of neuromodulatory pain therapy for diabetic polyneuropathy.
