What does sustainability mean at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg?

On the way to a green clinic

Numerous approaches and projects are making the Medical Center - University of Freiburg more climate-friendly.

Sustainability is a central component of the corporate philosophy at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg. As a signatory to Klimawin BW (formerly the WIN Charter), the University Medical Center has been driving forward the conversion to a sustainable hospital in terms of social, economic and ecological aspects for years. This topic page is dedicated in particular to ecological sustainability and presents approaches and projects that will make the university hospital more climate-friendly. After all, according to projections, the healthcare sector accounts for more than five percent ofCO2 emissions in Germany.

"We are aware of the great responsibility that hospitals bear as energy-intensive facilities - not least because climate protection is an integral part of health protection," says Professor Dr. Frederik Wenz, Chief Medical Officer of the Medical Center - University of Freiburg.

Great efforts are being made in many areas to implement sustainability in the medical field, the Administration and the infrastructure of the Medical Center - University of Freiburg.

"We are well on the way to becoming a sustainable hospital, but we still have a long way to go," says Wenz. "Our 15,000 employees are an important factor in our success by acting in a climate-friendly way themselves and using their innovative ideas to make the Uniklinik fit for a sustainable future."

Sustainability as a strategy

In its sustainability strategy adopted in 2025, the Medical Center - University of Freiburg describes its vision for environmentally conscious healthcare, defines five development areas for sustainable development and sets out three focus topics to be pursued more intensively by 2030.

Klimawin BW

Sustainable in three dimensions

The Medical Center - University of Freiburg should act economically, ecologically and socially. In 2019, it made a clear commitment to economic, ecological and social responsibility by signing the Klimawin BW (formerly WIN Charter).

Promoting sustainable thinking and action is the aim of the charter of the Baden-Württemberg Sustainability Initiative (WIN). The Uniklinik Freiburg forest is being created

Medical Center - University of Freiburg focuses on sustainable reforestation

In mid-April 2023, employees of the Medical Center - University of Freiburg reforested a fallow forest area in Burg-Höfen near Kirchzarten. Some children from the hospital's own daycare center also helped out diligently. The University Medical Center donated the deciduous and coniferous trees to the sustainable reforestation project, making an important contribution to protecting nature and the climate.

From maple to Douglas fir: diversity instead of monoculture in the new hospital forest

Instead of a monoculture, a mixed forest of maple, sweet chestnut, bird cherry and Douglas fir will grow in the Uniklinik Freiburg forest in future.

  • The University Hospital donated 1,000 trees for the sustainable reforestation of an area of woodland that had been lying fallow.
  • 500 trees were planted by employees together with children from the hospital's own nursery.

"I try to act as sustainably as possible - for the children who still have their whole future ahead of them," says Frank Jentsch, who is responsible for food purchasing in the University Hospital's staff canteen and places particular value on regional and organic products.

Sustainability in medicine

Hidden climate killers in the OR

Replacing and recycling anesthetic gases makes operations significantly more climate-friendly.

Many anesthetic gases used in operations today are real climate killers. Desflurane, which has around 2,500 times more impact on the climate than carbon dioxide, is considered particularly harmful. "A six-hour operation with desflurane is comparable to a trip from Freiburg to South Africa," says Prof. Dr. Hartmut Bürkle, Medical Director of the Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg. This is why Bürkle and his team have been developing more climate-friendly anesthesia procedures for many years. "Our strategy is to avoid and recycle," says Bürkle.

For example, desflurane has been replaced by less harmful anaesthetics throughout the hospital. Thanks to specially developed minimal flow techniques, significantly less anaesthetic gas is also used while maintaining the same level of safety for patients. "Thanks to the procedures we have established, the climate effect of a six-hour operation is reduced to a trip to Emmendingen," explains Bürkle. In addition, anaesthetic gases are collected in a filter directly in the operating room at the Bad Krozingen site and can later be completely recycled. Work is currently underway to introduce this system at the Freiburg site.
