Nursing experts Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) at the University Medical Center Freiburg
The unique selling point of German university hospitals and medical universities lies in the interweaving of four pillars: teaching, research, patient care and system-relevant future tasks. This places special demands on the work and qualifications of our employees.
APN nursing experts have been employed at the University Medical Center Freiburg since 2001 to ensure and continuously develop the care of our patients.
According to the definition of the International Council of Nurses (ICN), an Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) is a registered nurse who has acquired expert knowledge, can make complex decisions and has clinical competencies for advanced nursing practice, the characteristics of which are determined by context and/or country.
Our nursing expert concept at the UKF
The development and implementation of new APN nursing expert roles is always based on clinical need and patient-centered using the PEPPA framework and in collaboration with the Clinical Nursing Science, Quality and Development (PQE) department.
Support and development of our APN nursing experts
Starting with the deployment of the first APN nursing experts, a close-knit competence network has developed to date, which is continuously supported and further developed by the Nursing Directorate and the Clinical Nursing Science, Quality and Development (PQE) staff unit.
Today, we employ more than 25 Advanced Practice Nurses (APN).
APNs are nurses with at least a Master's degree who have acquired expert knowledge in a specialist area, decision-making skills in complex situations and clinical competencies for advanced nursing practice, complex decision-making skills and clinical competencies.
As a Clinical Nurse Specialist, they either specialize in people with a specific disease, e.g. sarcoma, in a specific form of therapy, e.g. stem cell transplantation, or in a symptom/cluster, e.g. pain, and provide continuous support and self-management support through the disease continuum. Or, as a generalist Clinical Nurse Specialist, they are focused on one setting, e.g. neonatology. Nurse Practitioner roles have not yet been implemented at the UKF.
Figure 1 shows the different role profiles on a continuum.
We support the future role holders in their development and fulfillment of tasks through a cross-clinic mentoring program. This is characterized by:
1. individual monitoring
- Individual orientation meeting at the beginning
- Regular regular communication from role development onwards
- Getting to know role models, e.g. through job shadowing
- Accompaniment of project and qualification work
2. group monitoring
- Participation in the APN trainee program over 3 years:
- Participation in the APN Role Development course
- Monthly meetings 2nd Monday of the month with further development based on PEPPA, current status report and peer support
- Input on technical/methodological questions/problems
- You support and promote the self-management of patients and relatives across ward and institutional boundaries
- You deal with trends and the latest scientific findings in the treatment and care of patients and shape the development of nursing care; your goal is best practice in nursing care
- You work strategically and in terms of content on nursing and multi-professional guidelines and standards
- You support and accompany nurses and teams with the aim of improving patient outcomes
- You will lead project groups and conduct training courses

How do our patients experience the care provided by the APN?
Our APN nursing experts are each responsible for a key topic, a specialist area and/or a patient group. They incorporate scientific findings into nursing practice with the aim of continuously improving the quality of care, are nursing contacts for employees from all professional groups and are actively involved in (nursing) research.
