Voluntary service

What do you do after school? No idea yet?

Voluntary service includes the Voluntary Social Year (FSJ) and the Federal Voluntary Service (BFD) in a social occupational field.

With us, you have the opportunity to try something new, test your own limits and try your hand at working life.

Voluntary service usually starts on September 1, but other dates are also possible.

We cooperate with the Internationaler Bund (IB) and Caritas as providers of the voluntary services. Following your application, you will be introduced to the options available in an information meeting with the IB/Caritas.

And so it goes on:

  • Examination of the application documents
  • If applicable, an invitation to an interview
  • Internship at the University Hospital

Dean Schneider, 18 years old, FSJ in nursing care, Department of Orthopedics and Trauma Surgery

"Before the voluntary social year, I did an internship that wasn't in the social sector. After an internship in a kindergarten, I realized that the social sector was more my thing. So I did some research and then saw the job advertisement from the Internationaler Bund (IB). I think an FSJ is much better than an internship because you have enough time to look at everything and familiarize yourself with it. At some point you get to know the processes, can work independently and take on responsibility. The FSJ in nursing care also brings you into contact with other areas, such as physiotherapists or the OR staff.

Everyone in the OR was very nice and explained their areas of responsibility to me, such as preparing for operations. That's when I realized that this is what I wanted to do. That's why I applied to train as a surgical assistant at the Uniklinik. The FSJ confirmed that I enjoy social work and can imagine it as a career."

Marwa Othman, after her FSJ she began her training as a surgical assistant.

"I've always been interested in training at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg. However, I really wanted to gain some practical experience after leaving school. What's more, the start of my training was a few months after I graduated. That's why I decided to do a voluntary social year (FSJ). I was able to gain a very comprehensive insight into the work at the hospital and get to know different areas.

I was mainly assigned to Jacobi Ward in the Dermatology Clinic and mainly supported the Department of Nursing with patient admissions and organizational activities. It was great that I had a lot of contact with the patients from day one.

During the FSJ, I realized that working at the clinic was just right for me. In the end, I decided to train as a surgical assistant and was very pleased that I was able to start straight after the FSJ."

Zahraossadat Dadgar, 26 years old, FSJ in nursing care, Department of Orthopedics and Trauma Surgery

"I find the Voluntary Social Year useful because you can use it to find out what you want to do later in your career. It was also great for me to learn the German language better, as I come from Iran. I did the FSJ because it enabled me to get to know the hospital system in Germany and I now understand how it works.

I like helping the patients. Especially the old and sick people who are not mobile, but also everyone else who needs help. I have now also decided to apply for training as an anesthesia technician at the university hospital in the spring. Until this starts, I've been promised that I can work on all the Uniklinik's wards as a sit-in and stand-in nurse to tide me over."

We also offer you other opportunities, such as internships, to give you an insight into the social sector.
