Confidential help after violence
(February 11, 2026) At the Medical Center – University of Freiburg, people who have experienced violence can find a safe and professional place to turn to. The Examination Center for Victims of Violence (USG) offers victims the opportunity to have injuries resulting from physical violence documented confidentially and in a manner that is admissible in court—free of charge and without any obligation to file a police report.

A recent study by the Federal Criminal Police Office and the Federal Ministry for Women shows how necessary this service is: women, young people, people with a migrant background, and members of the queer community are particularly affected. A large proportion of experiences of violence are not reported to the police—out of shame, fear of possible consequences, or uncertainty about what the next step might be.
Almost half of all people experience psychological violence in a relationship during their lifetime. One in six people report physical violence by their partner. Women are more frequently and often more severely affected; they report injuries and severe anxiety at an above-average rate. Many victims feel alone with their experiences and do not seek help.
The Investigation Center for Victims of Violence (USG) at the Medical Center – University of Freiburg makes it possible to have visible injuries documented in a legally secure manner. This service can be used independently of a police report and empowers victims in their self-determination. Appointments can be made by phone at 0761 270-81889.
