The Medical Center - University of Freiburg is now offering interested nurses an attractive trainee program for intensive care. Participants will gain an insight into three different intensive care units within 15 months

Thanks to technological and scientific advances, intensive care for people with serious illnesses is constantly evolving. At the same time, the professional demands on nursing staff have also increased, as they must be very familiar with the necessary and complex therapeutic measures.

To make it easier for interested nurses to enter the intensive care sector, the Medical Center - University of Freiburg is now offering a 15-month trainee program. Participants get to know three different intensive care units and also attend special advanced training courses on intensive care. The program can be started at any time. Eleven participants are currently completing the program. "Our trainees gain insights into sometimes very different areas of intensive care in a short space of time. Thanks to the close supervision by experienced colleagues, they quickly gain confidence in the intensive care unit field. This also makes the trainee program attractive for nursing staff directly after their training," says Andreas Haussmann, specialist nurse and Head of Nursing Education for Medical Intensive Care I and II.

Individual program design

Participants in the trainee program are individually trained and deployed for four to six months in three selected intensive care areas at the hospital. In addition to general nursing care for patients requiring intensive care, they learn how to monitor vital functions and provide professional care for ventilated patients. Experienced registered employees accompany the trainees during their practical assignments. The theoretical framework program of advanced training and seminar days complements the practical knowledge gained.

Thanks to the rotation principle, trainees can familiarize themselves with various intensive care areas. Only after successfully completing the program do the participants choose their desired specialist area and, together with the HR managers, their permanent place of work at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg. "The newly introduced trainee program offers real added value for interested nursing staff and our hospital: the participants are even better prepared for the demanding work in intensive care," says Helmut Schiffer, Nursing Director of the Medical Center - University of Freiburg.
