Nursing care in oncology
Duration of advanced training: 24 months for full-time employment, correspondingly longer for part-time employment
Start of advanced training: every 2 years in September

The next advanced training course is expected to start in September 2028.
- Healthcare and nursing staff or nursing specialists
- Healthcare and pediatric nurses
- geriatric nurses who provide nursing care and support for people with cancer in outpatient or inpatient healthcare facilities and at home
Qualification for nursing care tasks in oncological care, including
- Targeted assessment of care needs in the various phases of cancer and evaluation of interventions carried out,
- In-depth guidance, counseling and support for people with cancer and their families,
- Responsibility in patient-oriented care systems such as primary care/primary nursing,
- comprehensive coordination of patient-related services in the hospital and in other care systems,
- Responsible role in change processes within the care sector,
- Participation and shared responsibility for operational tasks in the care of people with cancer,
- Further development of ethical competence.

The theoretical part of the advanced training is spread over 18 block weeks of attendance, self-study time and 3 examination days. During the advanced training, participants write a practice-related paper.
Practice-related specialist work:
- Client Ward management
- Implementation at the practical location
- Topic from the department is fixed at the beginning of the advanced training
During the advanced training, continuous performance records must be provided, which form the basis for assessing successful participation.
Teaching times: usually from 8.30 am - 4.00 pm
Location: Classrooms of the Academy for Medical Professions at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg
Total scope: 720 hours
Total scope: 2,350 hours of work under expert practical guidance in mandatory and optional areas.
- At least 600 hours of conservative internal care with predominantly cancer patients
- At least 600 hours of surgical care with predominantly cancer patients
- At least 600 hours of radiology care with predominantly cancer patients
- At least 300 hours of elective work (e.g. ENT, stem cell transplantation, rehabilitation, self-help organization, outpatient clinics, practices, hospice, etc.) with predominantly cancer patients
- Remaining practical training time is distributed among the aforementioned areas
External participants can be deployed in their own hospital after consultation with the head of advanced training.

- Additional qualification "Palliative Care": Participants in the two-year, professionally integrated further training course also acquire a certificate for their successful participation in the advanced training course "Palliative Care", which corresponds to the contractual provisions of §39A SGB V.
- Further additional qualifications, e.g. "Breast Care", are possible depending on your own field of work.
- The advanced training concludes with a state examination, which consists of a written, an oral and a practical part.
The framework for the course is the regulation of the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Social Affairs on advanced training in the professions of nursing, pediatric nursing and geriatric nursing in the field of oncology. - Participation is free of charge for employees of the hospital.
- The course fee for external participants is €6,815
- The course comprises a total of 720 theoretical teaching units.
- You will receive 40 continuing education points as part of the registration of professional nursing care staff.
