Baden-Württemberg Center of Excellence for Advanced Training

At the Baden-Württemberg Center for Advanced Training (KWBW), the Institute of General Practice collaborates with the University Departments of General Practice in Heidelberg, Tübingen, and Ulm, as well as with the Baden-Württemberg Hospital Association and the Baden-Württemberg Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians.

KWBW Continuing Education Plus Network

The KWBW aims to promote the appeal of advanced training in general medicine and to continuously improve the quality of advanced training in order to counteract the looming shortage of young general practitioners. To ensure structured, continuous, and high-quality advanced training, our work focuses on the following areas:

  1. We offer a training-accompanying, industry-independent seminar program based on a 5-year curriculum
  2. We support networking among physicians in advanced training
  3. We facilitate the formation of regional training networks
  4. We provide didactic training for training supervisors in “train-the-trainer” seminars
  5. We support physicians in advanced training through a mentoring program during their advanced training period
  6. Networking with/among speakers

KWBW Verbundweiterbildungplus offers a nationwide seminar program designed to complement continuing education, featuring numerous single- and double-day seminars spread throughout the year at 3–4 regional locations, covering various thematic areas.

In addition, structured and needs-based individual or group mentoring sessions take place at the end of each seminar day. The mentoring is designed to support residents in their various roles and typically covers the following areas: Legal/WBO – Work-life balance – Interacting with the supervisor – Organizing practice workflows

During the seminar days, networking with colleagues and general practitioners can take place in a pleasant atmosphere.

To ensure structured advanced training and instructor certification, the KWBW offers “train-the-trainer” seminars to all advanced training instructors, covering topics such as advanced training and the advanced training curriculum, feedback training, and the use of the logbook and issuance of certificates.

In addition, the KWBW offers support in the initiation, development, and coordination of regional continuing education networks

At the University Continuing Education Network for General Practice in Freiburg, the entire specialist training program can be completed under one roof: with rotations in inpatient internal medicine, outpatient general practice, and additional periods of direct patient care. A rotation of up to six months at the Institute of General Medicine is also possible and is recognized as part of the outpatient advanced training segment. During this time, physicians in training can participate in teaching and research.

The Coordination Office at the Institute of General Medicine serves as the central point of contact: it provides advice, compiles individual rotation schedules, and assists with the application process for clinics and practices within the network.

In addition, the Baden-Württemberg Center for Advanced Training in Medicine (KWBW) offers a curriculum-based seminar program as well as group and individual mentoring for career planning. The costs are covered by the University Hospital and the practices.

Who is my primary point of contact? As the coordinating body for the advanced training network, the Institute of General Medicine serves as the first point of contact for physicians in advanced training and provides guidance on creating an individualized rotation plan for a total duration of up to 5 years (including outpatient advanced training).

Why do I need a consultation?
During the consultation, an individual training plan is developed, and a referral form is created accordingly, which physicians in advanced training use to independently apply for their desired rotations in the respective departments.

What happens if I receive an acceptance?
After a successful application, the acceptance of the rotation position is confirmed by a signature from the respective clinic director on the referral form. To prepare the employment contract, the Human Resources Department requires the application for hiring/continued employment (see also Section 6). The employment contract can be adjusted and extended over time in accordance with the rotations.

! IMPORTANT: Only applicants with an official referral form can be considered for participation in the University Continuing Education Network.

What else needs to be done?
Now that they have registered for advanced training, physicians can sign up for seminars at the Competence Center for Continuing Education on the following website:

https://www.advanced-training-in-general-medicine.de/

Evaluation
After each rotation, physicians in advanced training are surveyed by the IfA via an online questionnaire regarding their rotation to continuously improve the network. The clinics are surveyed annually regarding the application process and satisfaction levels to adapt the processes to meet their needs.
