Our induction and trainee programs

Together we will shape your future

Our trainee programs are the next step in your career. Here you can contribute and continuously expand your skills and experience. Get your own impression of the variety of tasks in intensive care or pediatric nursing or the content of our trainee program for nursing service management.

By setting up trainee positions, we want to actively develop managers in the nursing organization and systematically prepare them for future challenges, thereby further securing possible replacement arrangements at nursing management level in the medium term.

Contents of the trainee program include

  • getting to know the tasks and areas of responsibility of a nursing service manager and gradually taking on these areas of activity independently
  • initiating, managing and evaluating projects together with the nursing service manager
  • in the medium term, to deputize for the Head of Nursing during absences

Our trainee positions are advertised for the respective nursing service managers, e.g. trainee for management positions at the level of nursing service manager in the Department of Surgery. Current vacancies can be found on the job portal.

Our 14-month trainee program aims to qualify nursing staff in practice and theory for intensive care. Applicants for the trainee program are trained and deployed in two selected intensive care areas according to an individual deployment plan. During the practical assignments, the trainees are accompanied and supported by experienced, certified employees, practical instructors and the management of the trainee program. Theoretical teaching units and seminar days focusing on intensive care take place in parallel to these practical assignments. The aim is to make it easier to start a career in intensive care.

The practical training is based on the existing training concepts of the stations involved and is divided into several stages:

In individual cases, stages I and II can also be completed in direct succession within a single assignment.

The practical assignments are accompanied by a qualification programme, which is planned and organized by the educational management of the trainee programme with the Academy for Medical Professions. In addition, regular coaching by the supervision service is integrated into the program. There is also a joint visit to a specialist congress. The appointments are binding and must be taken into account by the responsible managers when planning their duties. The trainees are released from their duties on the ward for this purpose.

The objectives of the training and coaching courses are to qualify employees for their work in the intensive care unit, to avoid excessive demands and to make it easier for them to settle into the working world of intensive care units. The program is made up of the following modules.

It is always possible to extend the assignment at the current station or to remain there permanently.

Article in the Badische Zeitung about the trainee program

The aim of our 14-month qualification program is to give you confidence when starting work in the intensive care unit. We would like to qualify you for your work in intensive care, avoid excessive demands and make it easier for you to settle into the working world of intensive care units.

During the practical assignments, the participants are accompanied and supported by experienced qualified staff, practical instructors and the head of the qualification program.

The practical assignments are accompanied by a theoretical qualification. The content includes clinical and equipment monitoring as well as the basics of infusion and medication therapy. The topic of ventilation is covered in greater depth in special "ventilation days".

In addition, regular coaching by the supervision service is integrated into the program. The appointments are mandatory and are taken into account by the responsible managers when planning duties. Participants are released from their duties on the ward for this purpose.

Target group: The program is aimed at all new employees who start in the intensive care unit and consciously decide to work on a ward.

The Departments of Internal Medicine I and Radiation Oncology at the University Medical Center Freiburg offer the twelve-month trainee program "On(ko)-Board" to new and young experienced nurses.

The aim of the program is primarily to promote the safety and professionalism of nurses by providing them with practical and theoretical support as they enter the field of (radio)oncology and haematology.

The trainee program is aimed at all nurses who are interested in one of these specialist areas.

In the program, nurses (= trainees) are given the opportunity to familiarize themselves with key topics in oncology by means of a structured theory-practice transfer.

The components of the program are a) a 5-day theoretical training course on the specific topics and b) 12 months of trainer support in practice. This is intended to enable a gradual introduction to independent, high-quality patient care. In addition, the trainee program includes participation in a fixed number of in-house training courses, work shadowing with experts and regular staff meetings.

The teams on the wards are delighted that you are interested and look forward to working with you!

Your ward manager is responsible for the final planning of the trainee program. Please discuss any further questions and/or concerns with her. Alternatively, you are welcome to get in touch with the contact persons listed below.

Theoretical part:

Over the course of 5 training days, the trainees receive specialist input on topics such as the basics of (radio)oncology and haematology, symptom management and specialist skills: Infusion and medication management, handling feeds and drains and patient monitoring.

The training is rounded off with supervision for existing familiarization.

Example of a timetable:

1st rotation:
22. + 23.04., 03. + 04.06. and 26.06.2024

2nd rotation:
22. + 23.10., 11. + 12.11. and 10.12.2024

Practical part:

For twelve months, the trainees receive professional support from a trainer, who also acts as a contact person. The aim is to acquire and improve professional skills in a structured and needs-based manner.

Versatile, dual, individual - our STEP ONE entry-level nursing program offers you all of this.

Within 12 months, we would like to work with you to find your personal dream job. An individual placement plan, which is drawn up in consultation with the respective head of nursing, introduces you to your chosen specialist area and the clinic and prepares you in the best possible way for work on the day wards and, if applicable, intensive care areas. You will also receive theoretical input on the respective specialist area.

With our structured induction conceptin the nursing service, ONboardingat the University Hospital is your personal path to expertisein your new specialist area.

Practical training

Practical training takes place over a period of 12 months. The start date can be set individually. During the first eight weeks, you will be accompanied by three different colleagues in tandem. This means that you will have a central contact person on each shift who will be on hand to answer any questions you may have. From the third month on the ward, you will be able to work independently and will be supported by the management team, the main practical instructors or nursing experts. If your personal STEP ONE includes an assignment in the intensive care unit, you will move to this unit for three months after the first six months. After that, you have the option of returning to your previous ward, staying in the intensive care unit or getting to know another ward in the chosen clinic.

Theory units

A theoretical qualification program in the form of training days, CNE units, shadowing in the functional areas and reflection afternoons accompanies the practical induction. The dates are binding and must be taken into account by the responsible managers when planning their duties. The objectives of the training courses and the reflection afternoons are to qualify employees for their work at Freiburg University Medical Center and to expand their specialist knowledge.

Target group: The induction program is aimed at all nursing staff who are looking forward to a new and exciting working environment.

Application: Apply directly via the relevant job advertisements in our job portal.

Possible locations

The following clinics currently offer the program on their wards:

  • Clinic for Ophthalmology
  • Clinic for Gynecology
  • Clinic for Ear, Nose and Throat Medicine
  • Clinic for Neurosurgery, with assignments in the intensive care area
