Drainage of pseudocysts and necrosectomy
Severe inflammation in the pancreas can lead to pseudocysts and necrosis. Pseudocysts are fluid-filled chambers surrounded by a thin layer of connective tissue. Necroses refer to areas with dead cells. Both complications can be treated endoscopically.
With the help of endosonography, endoscopic ultrasound, a targeted puncture is made through the stomach wall in a controlled manner. Drains or a special metal stent can then be inserted via a guide wire, which is used to empty the pseudocyst and drain the fluid inwards into the stomach. If necrosis is present, the endoscope can be used to enter the necrosis through the stomach wall and the dead tissue can be removed using various instruments. This usually requires several treatment sessions.
Compared to open surgery, endoscopic therapy is significantly less invasive. The procedures are performed exclusively under inpatient conditions.
