Sigmoidoscopy and rectoscopy
If the lower part of the large intestine and the rectum are to be examined, a sigmoidoscopy is useful. It can be used to examine the last section of the large intestine, which is known as the sigmoid colon and is between 50 and 60 centimetres long. A sigmoidoscope, a flexible tube that is inserted into the intestine, is used for this. During the examination, images of the bowel can be taken and samples can also be taken. The procedure is mainly used in cases of suspected cancer or inflammatory diseases of the large intestine.
Before the examination
For a better overview during the examination, the rectum must be cleared of stool beforehand. This is done using a clysma (mini-enema) or an enema immediately before the examination.
After the examination
Discomfort in the anal area, flatulence or nausea are generally harmless and disappear spontaneously. If you experience symptoms such as pain, fever, sweating, vomiting, vomiting blood or blood in the stool after the examination, please go to the hospital emergency room or your physician immediately.
