Removal of larger polyps
(Endoscopic mucosal resection - EMR)Flat or large polyps in the colon must be removed. The endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR) method is used for this. First, the mucous membrane is injected with a needle so that it stands out from the deeper layers of the intestinal wall. The mucous membrane is then removed with a snare. Smaller polyps can be removed in one piece, while larger polyps usually need to be removed in several pieces.
Another area of application of EMR is the removal of so-called Barrett's mucosa in the oesophagus. In this case, the mucous membrane of the oesophagus has changed into a shape typical of the small intestine due to repeated inflammation. In contrast to ablation in the large intestine, a special attachment cap is usually used for this. Before the tissue is removed, special rubber bands are often applied to make the procedure easier.
Because this technique takes a little longer and, in contrast to normal polyp removal, there is a higher risk of complications, it is usually performed on an inpatient basis. Of course, the procedure is explained in detail beforehand.
