Management of a ward or unit

Duration of advanced training: 15 months

Start of advanced training: March or October, alternating

The next advanced training course is expected to start in October 2027.

  • The target group for advanced training is employees who have completed training in general nursing care, healthcare and nursing, healthcare and pediatric nursing, geriatric nursing, midwifery, curative education nursing, surgical and anesthesia technical assistance and medical-technical assistance.
  • In addition, a relevant professional activity after completion of the training, which should last two years, is required.

The advanced training familiarizes students with the complex leadership tasks of middle management in the various areas of the healthcare system and imparts the specialist knowledge and skills required to fulfill these tasks.

In particular, the advanced training should enable students to take on the following tasks:

  • To enable the implementation of corporate objectives,
  • carry out personnel planning and deployment planning for the ward or unit,
  • to enable job satisfaction through adequate employee management and to acquire communication and conflict resolution skills,
  • to ensure cooperation with other professional groups and to recognize business contexts and put them into practice, taking into account professional circumstances.

Total scope: 800 hours (theory: 720 hours, practice 80 hours)

Our state-recognized advanced training is offered in modules. Modules are self-contained learning units. The modules may be offered in parts together for the various advanced training courses.
Basic modules successfully completed in other advanced training courses can be credited to the extent of their equivalence.

The theoretical lessons take place in block phases (1-2 weeks each) and possibly as study days.

Lesson times: Mon-Fri, 8.30 am - 4.00 pm

Location: Classrooms of the Academy for Medical Professions at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg

The advanced training in practice consists of practical components in the form of internships (80 hours). These are to be organized independently by the participants in consultation with and with the support of the respective Nursing Administration / Nursing Service Management and the head of the advanced specialist training.

The advanced training concludes with a state examination consisting of a written and an oral examination.

  • Written examination: A supervised examination lasting between 120 and 180 minutes.
  • Oral examination: Individual examinations, each lasting 30 minutes

Successful completion ends with the state examination for the management of a ward or unit.

  • The course fee for external participants is currently €6,815.

  • The course comprises a total of 720 teaching units.
  • You will receive 40 continuing education points as part of the registration of professional nursing care staff.

The B.A. degree course in Management in Healthcare at the Catholic University of Applied Sciences Freiburg offers you a sound education in the field of management specifically for the healthcare sector.

A special feature of the degree program is that up to two semesters of the Bachelor's degree can be credited after successfully completing advanced training in managing a ward or unit at the Academy for Medical Professions Freiburg. This means that you can complete the course in five semesters (2.5 years).

The course always starts in the winter semester in October. The course content covers management, economics and health.

In addition, two grades from the advanced training are included in the Bachelor's certificate.

You also have the opportunity to spend a semester abroad and gain valuable international experience.
