The Laboratory of Molecular ImmunoEngineering (PI: Jun.-Prof. Priscilla S. Briquez) Department of General and Visceral Surgery Medical Center – University of Freiburg is looking for a
PhD student in Cancer Anti-Angiogenic Therapies (m/f/d)
We are looking for one highly motivated and creative PhD student to develop novel drug delivery systems for colorectal cancer therapy. This PhD position (65%) is funded by the DFG a duration of 3 years. The selected candidate will be starting as soon as possible, e.g., August 2025 (possibility to discuss).
THE RESEARCH – The main topic of the PhD student is Anti-Angiogenic Cancer Therapies for colorectal cancer. The PhD student will use protein engineering to develop anti-cancer therapy that effectively prevent the formation of blood vessels in tumors, thereby suffocating the tumor and preventing growth. To do so, the PhD student will learn techniques of protein design, production, purification and characterization. He/she will additionally develop in vitro assays for evaluation of the engineered proteins and use common ELISA, flow cytometry and microscopy techniques. Finally, the PhD student will use animal experimentation to assess the efficacy and safety of the engineered proteins in vivo, after having received the mandatory trainings. The PhD student will also support teaching of students in the laboratory and will attend seminars, classes or workshop to improve its soft-skills and career development.
THE PI & THE LAB – Prof. Priscilla Briquez is an expert in protein engineering, drug delivery and biomaterials. She conducts applied research with passion and ambition to develop new therapies for tissue regeneration and cancer immunotherapies, as showcased by cutting-edge contributions in her field. She did her Master degree and PhD at the Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne (EPFL, Switzerland) and her post-doctoral research at the University of Chicago (IL, USA). She is now developing her laboratory as a young, dynamic, multi-cultural and collaborative group, which started in May 2021. It is located in the modern and excellent scientific environment of the Medical Center – University of Freiburg, close to the Biology Faculty, the Engineering Faculty and the Max Planck Institute. Freiburg is ideally placed at the center of the European University Campus, close to Basel (Switzerland) and Strasbourg (France).
YOUR PROFILE – Our group is looking for a new PhD member with high motivation and curiosity for Science & Engineering, and who are willing to perform their own research while collaborating with the other members of our group. The ideal candidate should have/be:
- a Master degree in Biology, Bioengineering, Biochemistry, Material sciences or similar
- willing to perform animal experimentation in accordance with the ethical regulations
- good communication skills & team working spirit
- creative innovative thinking
- english language is required
APPLICATION – If you are interested, please submit a motivation letter, a CV, and the contact details of 1-2 referees, as soon as possible ia our online button!
