Internship in General Practice

The training takes place exclusively in accredited teaching practices affiliated with the Institute of General Practice. Due to the unique nature of general practice, one-on-one instruction is the norm. This gives students the opportunity to review the entire scope of clinical medicine using practical examples before the M3 exam. The goal is to practice independent medical practice under the constant supervision of an experienced colleague.

PJ - General Practice Campus Day

The Campus Day takes place four times a year. The program alternates between various teaching formats (seminars, workshops, practical exercises), which allow PJ students to review and deepen their understanding of practice-relevant topics. Additionally, the mentor session offers the opportunity to ask questions about advanced training and career prospects. The detailed program will be sent to you shortly before the event.

For students in the General Practice PJ tertial, Campus Day is a mandatory event. You must therefore be excused from your teaching practices to attend the event. Please inform the practice owners in a timely manner. In the event of illness or vacation, we ask that you cancel your registration as early as possible by contacting Ms. Schäfer (julia.schaefer@uniklinik-freiburg.de) directly at the Institute of General Medicine.

PJ students who are currently in a different rotation can receive a certificate of participation from us—however, the decision to grant time off is at the discretion of the responsible clinic physicians.

In addition, those who are currently preparing for exams are, of course, also warmly invited...

The teaching clinics listed below are accredited for clinical rotations.

We assign students to practices during a group meeting with all students in the respective cohort (May or November).

Assignment to a clinical rotation practice is handled exclusively by the Institute of General Practice; please do not contact the practices directly.

You can view the current availability of PJ practices under “Current Practice Availability.”

The General Practice clinical rotation is financially supported for students in teaching practices affiliated with the University of Freiburg through funding from the Baden-Württemberg Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians (KVBW) as part of the "Ziel und Zukunft" project.

The funding conditions and application forms for students are available for download below. To ensure funding, these applications must be approved by the KVBW before the start of the General Practice clinical rotation (§13b). For this purpose, a “Confirmation from the clinical rotation practice regarding the student’s admission” is required; the form can be found in the download section below.
Please let us know as soon as the application has been approved by the KVBW.

Frequently Asked Questions:

A list of the practices generally available can be found directly under the menu item “PJ Training Practices.”
All of these practices had been involved in training as part of the general practice block rotation for a long time prior to their accreditation as “PJ training practices” and have been well-evaluated by students. Which practices can accept a student for a specific tertial can only be determined in detail as part of the specific assignment by the Institute of General Medicine.

First, the standard application process applies: Students apply for the elective tertial at the Office of the Dean of Studies. If there are more applicants than available spots (the exact number varies from semester to semester), the assignment is determined by lottery.
For students assigned to the elective term in General Medicine, a meeting is then scheduled promptly at the Institute of General Medicine, during which—ideally by consensus among all participants—assignments to the practices are made. If a consensus cannot be reached in individual cases, the decision is again made by lottery.
Once the assignment is complete, a trial workday at the assigned practice is mandatory; only then is the practice’s acceptance considered binding.

The freedom of movement during the clinical internship created by the amendment to the ÄAppO makes this possible. Applications from students outside the university must also be submitted initially through the Office of the Dean of Studies. If any clinical placements remain available after Freiburg students have been assigned, they will be allocated to external students.

In conjunction with the Dean of Studies’ semester-long introductory session on the clinical internship (PJ) held in the ENT lecture hall (dates available on the Dean of Studies’ website), the Institute of General Medicine will have an information booth at each session.
Staff members will be available there for one-on-one discussions.
In addition, a few days after this session, another detailed information session will take place in cooperation with the Baden-Württemberg Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians, which

The PJ-Mobil service is available if the elective rotation in general practice is completed in a rural area (fewer than 10,000 residents). The decision is also based on whether the chosen practice is accessible by public transportation and the distance that must be traveled.
Additionally, the family practice must participate in the AOK’s HZV contract.

However, as an institute, we do not have a legally binding claim against the Perspektive Hausarzt Foundation, which provides the vehicles.

Please feel free to contact Ms. Schäfer (julia.schaefer@uniklinik-freiburg.de), and we will be happy to register you for use.
