The Department of Nephrology and General Medicine at the University Medical Center Freiburg, AG Prof. Dr. med. Carsten Bergmann, offers a position as
PhD student genetics (m/f/d)
As one of the leading labs for genetic kidney diseases, we offer a PhD student position for a research project on cystic kidney disease embedded in the collaborative research center SFB 1453. In our group we join forces in a closely interdisciplinary manner between human genetics (WES, WGS, RNAseq, liquid biopsy), bioinformatics, cell and molecular biology with extensive experience in zebrafish design and modeling. We overlook one of the worldwide greatest patient cohorts and regularly publish our data in top-ranked journals. The project aims to better understand disease pathophysiology and the underlying protein network to foster future therapeutic approaches.
We offer:
- working in a well-experienced, dedicated research team based on partnership and team-play with complementary approaches in the field of modern genome-based medicine
- participation in an excellently rated DFG-funded collaborative research project (SFB 1453) with focus on genetic kidney diseases
- working in modern laboratories with high-end equipment
- the opportunity to join an international and multidisciplinary graduate program at the University of Freiburg (SGBM, Spemann Graduate School of Biology and Medicine)
- varied activities, creative freedom to develop your own ideas and the opportunity to establish new methods in the laboratory
- a 3-year 65% PhD position
Job description:
- analyses of human patient cells, knock-out/in cells (immunostaining, co-immunoprecipitation, luciferase reporter assays, antibody staining)
- validation and further characterization of mass spectrometry derived newly identified protein networks at the primary cilium
- analyses of cilia-dependent signaling processes in mutant cells and zebrafish (RNAseq, bioinformatics)
- Expression studies, Knock-down and knock-out analyses in the zebrafish animal model
- high resolution imaging (Confocal microscopy, Slide scanner, Expansion Microscopy)
- close collaboration with other CRC1453 enclosed research groups that enable insight into various research areas (e. g. bioinformatics, clinical and molecular genetics).
- close collaboration with our genetic colleagues for genomic and bioinformatic data analysis
- evaluation of cutting-edge technologies for their use in genetic testing
What we are looking for:
- team-player with a positive and open mindset
- completed studies in the field of biology, medicine or related natural sciences
- high self-motivation and willingness to work independently
- diligent, accurate way of working
- willingness to work on the zebrafish animal model and to participate in routine work
- previous knowledge in the following fields is desirable: molecular biology, cell biology, bioinformatics, statistics and/or microscopy
- previous experience in working with zebrafish is an advantage
