The Neurodevelopmental Epigenetics group of Prof. T. Vogel at the University of Freiburg is looking for a

PhD candidate "Epigenetics in CNS development" (m/f/d)

The Neurodevelopmental Epigenetics group of Prof. T. Vogel at the University of Freiburg investigates mechanisms of transcriptional control during stem cell and neuronal specification in brain development, and in CNS disease (Gather et al, NAR 2025; Akol et al, PNAS, 2023; Appiah et al, Embo Rep, 2023; Ferrari et al, Nat Comm, 2020; Franz et al, NAR, 2019).

The group studies epigenetic mechanisms and transcription factor functions in mice and humans, applying state-of-the-art methodology including single-cell sequencing approaches, bioinformatics, CRISPR/Cas9 in iPSCs and human brain organoids. We are an ambitious group with thorough supervision and diverse opportunities for advanced training, learning and networking.

We are looking for a PhD candidate to strenghten the team.

We are offering:

  • to work on a highly topical research project with state-of-the art technology in a collaborative setting
  • training options in advanced laboratory and/or bioinformatics methods
  • an international work atmosphere
  • a scheme towards academic qualification
  • participation in the university’s training offers for doctoral candidates, e.g. coaching and workshops
  • the option to participate in international conferences and meetings
  • regular training on aspects of good scientific practice
  • participation in national third-party funded consortia

You will:

  • undertake research in one of the groups projects regarding epigenetic regulation during brain development
  • perform the necessary experimental design, wet laboratory experiments and (bioinformatics) analyses
  • communicate your research results in regular meetings and report
  • follow and discuss developments in the field of neurodevelopmental epigenetics
  • integrate into the necessary organisational tasks of the group and the institute

You are strengthening our team through:

  • a strong background in biochemistry, biology, molecular medicine, medicine or equivalent with an outstanding M.Sc. degree
  • experience in techniques of cell biology, protein biochemistry and molecular biology, ideally applied to understand the development or function of the central nervous system
  • experience in live cell microscopy, or electroporation techniques would be considered as additional surplus, as is experience in brain organoid research
  • experience with bioinformatical analyses of large data sets and next-generation-sequencing ideally on single cell level would also be a surplus
  • very good communication skills in English
  • the ability to work synergistically in a team
  • passion, curiosity and high motivation for unsolved research questions in the field of neurodevelopmental epigenetics
The position is to be filled on a part-time basis (65%, TVL E13) initially for a fixed term of 3 years.

Please send applications including:

  • CV
  • degree certificates
  • 2 reference letters
  • a short letter of motivation for application to the lab
  • a list of publications
