The Thimme/Hofmann lab, AG Röhlen, Department of Medicine II, Medical Center – University of Freiburg, is looking for a
PhD student (m/f/d)
We focus on translational research in the field of tumor immune escape in Hepatocellular carcinoma. Our results contribute to a better understanding of tumor-immune cell interactions with implications for therapeutic strategies.
Job description:
The aim of this project is to comprehensively study the role of Cell Adhesion Molecules (CAMs) on structural cells such as fibroblasts and endothelial cells for tumor immune escape in Hepatocellular Carcinoma using high-dimensional immune cell profiling and patient-derived 3D model systems. Your work will give insights into the potential of Cell Adhesion Molecules as potential targets to overcome resistance to immunotherapy for the continuously rising number of patients with hepatocellular carcinoma.
What we offer:
- a translational project in a clinically relevant setting with the possibility to implement your own ideas
- Working in a dedicated interdisciplinary team of biologists and physicians on exciting research topics
- a unique network of excellent partners for continuous support in the development of your scientific profile
- professional and efficient supervision supported by a thesis advisory committee
- a good working atmosphere in modern laboratories with cutting-edge equipment
- Buddy System for new doctoral researchers
- Participation in a wide range of further training opportunities and participation in (inter-)national conferences
- Salaries are based on the German academic standards (TV-L E13, 65 %) with attractive employee benefits, e.g. JobTicket
Your work includes but is not limited to:
- Autonomous processing of research tasks related to immune escape in hepatocellular carcinoma
- Working with 3D ex vivo models, including tumor spheroids and organoids
- Application of state-of-the-art and cutting-edge methods of cell and molecular biology, including immunohistochemistry, imaging mass cytometry and high-dimensional FACS
- Establishing of new methods to elaborate on subsequent research questions
- Presentation of results on regular lab and consortium meetings and (inter-)national conferences
- Supervision of students (m/f/d)
Profile:
We are looking for an ambitious PhD candidate (M.Sc. in biology, molecular medicine or related subjects) (m/f/d) with a strong interest in immunooncology and translational research. Applicants should have experience in 2D and/or 3D cell culture and basic methods of molecular biology (qPCR, immunofluorescence, western blot) as well as basic statistical analyses and data visualization using MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), GraphPad Prism or “R”. Strong communication skills with solid command of English to work in an interdisciplinary and international team are expected.
If you are interested, please submit your application in German or English (including CV, a motivation letter and contact details of two references).
