The medical technologist for laboratory analysis (MTL) (previously: medical-technical laboratory assistant (MTLA)) carries out highly qualified activities in the field of healthcare, which are assigned to them by law for independent performance on the instructions of the medical service. They mainly work in medical diagnostics, science and research. The work is carried out directly on the patient or on the examination material. No reliable diagnosis can be made without the work of the MTL.
The five main areas of responsibility of an MTL include
- Clinical chemistry: testing blood, urine and stool for chemical composition,
- haematology: determination of the number of white and red blood cells, determination of blood groups and microscopic examination of blood cells
- Histology/cytology: preparation, staining and evaluation of tissue sections and cell smears
- Molecular biology: analysis of information-carrying macromolecules such as DNA or RNA
- Microbiology: analysis of the smallest organisms such as viruses, bacteria, fungi and parasites.
Duration & start of training
You will complete a three-year apprenticeship that ends with a state examination. Training begins annually on October 1.
Theoretical and practical training
Theoretical and practical instruction by qualified teachers (at least 2,600 hours in a block system).
Practical training in the various departments of the University Hospital and outside the University Hospital (at least 2,000 hours).
The MTL profession offers numerous opportunities to increase professional qualifications and to deepen activities in special areas.
Training remuneration
valid from January 1, 2021
- 1st year of training: 1,245.24 euros
- 2nd year of training: 1,305.30 euros
- 3rd year of training: 1,402.03 euros
- Interest in scientific and medical issues

- Communication skills for direct work with patients
Desired school-leaving qualification
Abitur, intermediate school leaving certificate, lower secondary school leaving certificate with at least two years of completed vocational training or other equivalent school education
