Medical technologists for radiology MTR (previously: medical-technical radiology assistants) work not only in doctors' surgeries or radiology institutes, but also in hospitals or as teachers at an MTA school.
The demand for trained MTRs is currently very high. This is why the employment and future prospects in this profession are above average.
The MTR profession is very varied. In addition to a keen interest in technology and IT, the focus is also on people. The job offers new challenges every day. The MTR (m/f/d) examines or treats patients on state-of-the-art equipment such as computer and magnetic resonance tomographs, accelerator systems, gamma cameras or normal X-ray machines in cooperation with the responsible medical service.
Duration & start of training
You will complete a three-year apprenticeship, which ends with a state final examination. Training begins twice a year on April 1 and October 1.
Theoretical and practical training
In theoretical lessons, you will be prepared for your practical assignments in the clinics. This includes subjects such as anatomy, biology and psychology. You will also learn how to deal with radiation doses in radiology. Although these are very low, they can still cause damage if used incorrectly. This is why we attach particular importance to compliance with radiation protection conditions.
In radiological diagnostics, you will gain an insight into various specialist areas, such as digital radiography (digital X-ray images), angiography (imaging of blood vessels), computed tomography (CT, cross-sectional images, 3D images), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI, imaging of internal organs and tissue).
In nuclear medicine , you will deal with the diagnostic and therapeutic use of radioactive substances. Your work here lies between X-ray diagnostics and radiotherapy.
In the Department of Radiation Oncology , for example, you will learn how to use radiation equipment.
Training remuneration
valid since January 1, 2021
- 1st year of training: 1,245.24 euros
- 2nd year of training: 1,305.30 euros
- 3rd year of training: 1,402.03 euros
Appointments are arranged individually (usually from 8:15 am to 12 noon)

Desired school-leaving qualification
Abitur, intermediate school leaving certificate, secondary school leaving certificate with completed vocational training or other equivalent school education
